Traderhome – Architectural Profile – July 1999

Located in northern Westchester, this one hundred and two acre development is surrounded by horse farms, country estates and a one-room post office.  As the developer, architect and contractor for this unique project, John Ciardullo worked closely with the town neighbors and community board members to maintain the natural landscape, preserve the wetlands and improve environmental standards.

To retain the rural character of the area, rocks carved from the land are now the dry-stacked walls that line the road connecting Waccabuc to the community.  All of the four-acre lots are sited to take advantage of their physical features and care was taken to fell as few trees as possible.  Though each home was built to the owner’s individual preferences, a common material palette of indigenous stone bases and fireplaces, wood trim and cedar shingles was used to create a cohesive neighborhood.  Rock Shelter Road illustrates that development can complement a community and reflect its values aesthetically and ecologically.
