Straddling the bulkhead surrounding Governors Island and partially cantilevered on piles above the water of New York Harbor Building 134 is an important addition to The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School campus.   The building, originally a US Coast Guard Support Center and Dormitory, required new windows, extensive interior renovations and a full replacement of the plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems to meet the NYC SCA Green Schools Guide.

The unusual program for the M.A.S.T. Center included a laboratory with an on-site oyster hatchery tanks, a boat construction and maintenance shop with garage door access, scuba gear storage room as well as classrooms, locker rooms and offices. Many of the design features used in the main school, such as its maritime architectural elements and interior color scheme, were incorporated into the Center.   The oyster hatchery is part of the Billion Oyster Project, a long-term, large-scale plan to restore 1 billion oysters to New York Harbor over the next 20 years and in the process train thousands of young people in New York City to restore the ecology and economy of their local marine environment.
