Highland Road Residence completed in the spring of 2024 is a residential single family detached project larger than 2,500 square feet located in Old Chatham, New York.
The location of the house was meticulously placed cooperatively with the Columbia Land Conservancy to preserve precious areas of forest, open space and wildlife habitats maintaining the rural character of the county. The objectives in placing the house were to maintain views of the mountain by staying well below the ridge line and minimizing disturbance to the character of landscape on the site. Upon entering the boundaries of the property off of Highland Road, moving up along a long dirt road, the house peeks briefly through a patch of woods, coming into full view only moments before arrival.
This adherence to conservation led the design. The house is built onto the slope of the mountain, starting with a wall of locally inspired stone extending north/south through the house and into the adjacent landscape. The stone wall formed the spine of the home of which all other design elements are tied. Three pavilions anchored to the wall form the various living areas of the home. The visually separate, flat roof structure ensures the house is nestled into and becomes part of the mountainside.
