The New York Harbor School Annex is an adaptive reuse project for existing neo-Georgian style masonry building on Governors Island. The existing three-story building will function as an annex to the successful NY Harbor School situated directly across the street. Originally built as an apartment building for the military in 1938 by the US War Department , this project will establish the legal designation of Building 555 for educational purposes.
It will provide additional classroom spaces to support the school’s unique maritime-themed curriculum. The project successfully achieved building sustainability goals including the complete electrification of its mechanical systems, helping to phase out the use of fossil fuel burning equipment in city projects.
As a contributing building to the Historic District on Governors Island, modifications to the building exterior including an accessible entrance, new windows, doors and a new concrete stair entrance facing the original school have undergone review with both city and state landmark authorities. The New York Harbor School Annex will be fully accessible.
