John Ciardullo’s portfolio encompasses a body of work that spans nearly fifty years. As Principal-In-Charge of John Ciardullo, P.C. Architecture and Planning, he has designed and provided structural engineering for projects ranging in scale, type and market. The strength of the firm’s work is based on John’s assertion that architecture is a humanistic art, the most social of all arts. In his words, “Arriving at a solution to the social issue, that’s the work I’ve been doing all these years.”
Distinguished by his numerous community facilities such as award winning schools, recreation centers, libraries, parks, pools and a variety of housing types he has helped to significantly and positively impact communities. As a highly respected architect with educational and professional experience in associated engineering fields, John is frequently consulted for structural and civil engineering as well as city and regional planning. Defined by sound structures that become delightful spaces to live, work, learn and play, his work includes the architectural and structural design for projects ranging in various scales, types and markets.
His interest in architecture began at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art in New York City. Between earning his Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Bradley University and his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design, John worked as a Structural Engineer with the French firm, Freyssinet Inc. There he specialized in prefabricated and prestressed concrete structures both in the U.S. and abroad. During his studies at Harvard, John was a Teaching Fellow in structural design, in addition to working in the office of Weidlinger Associates, Consulting Engineers. As Project Engineer and Structural Designer in this office, he had the opportunity to work with Walter Gropius, Josep Lluiz Sert, Pietro Belluschi and Eduardo Catalano on the structural designs of educational, municipal and office buildings. He was also employed as a Structural Designer on institutional and corporate projects for noted architects, such as Marcel Breuer, while working with Wiesenfeld & Leon Consulting Engineers.
John Ciardullo is a licensed architect and is registered in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and South Carolina. He maintains his professional membership in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Complimenting his architectural practice, John has taught at Pratt Institute in the Department of Architecture and served as an Instructor and Director of the first year Planning Studio in the City and Regional Planning Department. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at Columbia University where he taught second year Architectural Design Studio and was coordinator of the Building Technology curriculum. Today, he continues to encourage and mentor the architects, engineers and construction specialists working at John Ciardullo, P.C. Architecture and Planning to intimately integrate structural engineering with the practice of architecture.
